A Letter from God

If you would, turn with me to Jeremiah, chapter 29. It’s located in the prophetic section of your Bible – right past the Psalms – in between Isaiah and Lamentations.

I grew up not far from here in Huntington Woods in Camp Croft. So, I’m very familiar with this area. You know, it’s changed a little bit since I was growing up here. I used to ride my bike up the steep hill on Old Georgia Road, now known as Carolina Country Club Road. Actually, I was a chubby little kid, so I had to walk my bike up the hill. And I would cross the two lanes of Highway 56 to go to the “Fast Fare” at the top of that hill with a dollar in my pocket and I would buy a coke and a comic book.

I did that every Saturday. And if the Fast Fare didn’t have the comic book I needed for my collection, I would ride my bike up to Eckerd Drugs Store right beside the Winn-Dixie which was across the street from my Elementary School, EP Todd.

When I got to be a teenager, I got my first job at the Winn Dixie. My high school sweetheart and now wife, Lisa, worked at Roses. Sometimes  we would take our breaks at the Hardee’s on the corner.

Of course, now, there’s a Bi-Lo where the school was, the Hardee’s has moved, Winn Dixie and Roses have closed, The Fast Fare is something else and I’m pretty sure they don’t sell comic books. And now, any parent who would allow their child to ride their bike all those places and cross the four lanes of traffic on Highway 56 would probably be thrown in jail for it.

Things have changed, haven’t they?

Those of you my age or older would probably agree… This is not the same world that we grew up in.

I think it’s pretty evident from the election season that the face of America has changed.

About 50% of the country voted for traditional American values and about 50% voted for various progressive values.

The Presidency was won by a coalition of people that supported many different agendas from abortion, to gay marriage, to a more passive role in foreign affairs, to various social programs such as government healthcare, welfare and social security.

The world where we all came from similar backgrounds and had similar beliefs has changed. There are many more “worldviews” than there ever have been in America today.

If you don’t know what I mean by “worldview,” a worldview is really just that, how one views the world around us. It’s the lens through which one views everything from religion to world politics to personal behavior.

And everyone has one, whether they realize it or not.

Now the world view that the majority of us in this room would hold is a “Christian worldview” which is this: Continue reading

The Doctrine of Inerrancy

No Gravatar

The Doctrine of Inerrancy is important for two reasons.

First, if the Bible is not inerrant, it has no authority over us. When seen as God’s Word to us, we can have full assurance that the commands and promises of the Bible are binding.

When seen as a strictly human book, one that was “inspired” by God or is a record of man’s “experience” with God, then we can not have that same confidence.

Who in their right mind lives their life based on the Lord of the Rings Trilogy or the Harry Potter novels?

Human books, while able to pass along valuable information, can not and do not have the authority to tell us how we must live!

Second, without an inerrant Bible, God is not who the Bible says He is. The Bible presents us with a God who wants to communicate with His creation. This is a God who orders all things. He planned from “before the foundation of the world” for our salvation. This would indicate that a God who could not communicate with us and could not keep His Word free from error does not have the power to save. He would not be the omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, omnibenevolent presented to us in the Bible. Instead, it would prove that He is unable to preserve His means of communication and that communication would be a lie.

So, if you are a Christian, and you really believe in the power of God and His saving Grace, you should naturally believe in the inerrancy of His Word.

General Revelation

“General Revelation” reveals the existence and nature of God.

When one surveys the night sky and sees the millions of stars, each one a sun nearly or more powerful than our own which is 6,000˚C on the surface and over 1 million degrees in the corona, one sees the power of the one who created them.

Here on earth, one can see the vast expanses and wild animals and tides and volcanoes; each one a testament to the power of the one who created them.

The Onion Man

The Onion guy

I love to talk about God’s providence. He is so good to us to allow us to be a part of what he is already doing.

Today, the missionary asked if I would lead another Bible study. Of course, I agreed, but my pastor reminded me that there were others who hadn’t led one yet and they may want to. He asked if that would be ok with me and again I agreed. Well, the fellow he asked was not ready, so Josh said, “You’re back on.”

So, I was teaching, I wasn’t and then I was again. When we showed up at the house, no one was home! That’s the way it is in Costa Rica, though. If you have to be on a schedule and can’t handle change, CR is probably not for you.

So, I was teaching, I wasn’t, I was, and finally, I wasn’t. We decided to walk around town to see if we could find opportunities to witness. The group walked ahead and I lingered behind, taking in all the sights and smells. Just then, I looked over and saw “the Onion Man.” He smiled at me and rose from his seat. I said to the missionary, “Jacob, I think we need to go back and talk to this Man.” Continue reading

Costa Rica Bible Study on Jeremiah 29

No Gravatar

This is the text of the Bible study I lead in a home in Cot, Costa Rica
• Today, I’d like us to study a chapter from the Old Testament book of Jeremiah.
• The Jews, God’s chosen people in the Old Testament were in exile in Babylon due to their sin. The prophet Jeremiah had tried to warn them, but they would not listen.
• Jeremiah Chapter 29 is a letter he wrote to encourage the exiles.
• There is much that we can learn from it, too. Continue reading

Cot, Cartago Province, Costa Rica

This is Cot, a typical Costa Rican village. The houses are small, but well kept. They may not look like much on the outside, but they are clean and homey. Many of these houses have beautiful tile and it’s a great conversation starter.

Welcome to Costa Rica; You’ve Broken Jesus’ Heart!

Christ Statue, Volcan Irazu, Cartago Costa Rica

We arrived in San José at Juan Santamaria International Airport on Wednesday, July 18, 2012. A tremendous thunderstorm came up, but in typical Costa Rica fashion was gone in just a few minutes. From there we made the hour drive to Cartago, Costa Rica.

This statue is is at the entrance to the Volcan Irazu area. It’s a reminder to us that these people feel intimidated by Christ. They feel that while He died for their sins, they continue to sin and that has pierced him in the heart. They believe Jesus is angry at them. We have come to share the love of Jesus for those whom He died for. Once you have accepted Christ alone for your salvation, you are no longer under His judgement. Please pray the Ticos (Costa Ricans) will recognize the Grace of God and accept Christ alone for their salvation – there is no other mediator and our works are as filthy rags.

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. (1Tim. 2:5 ESV)

We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. (Is. 64:6 ESV)
